Social media has grown to be the latest manner of interactive communication online. Essentially, it is all about engaging actively and 'meeting' with other like-minded people regularly even with everyday information (social networking) or highlighting notable articles, videos or websites (social bookmarking) through to visiting forums where targetted visitors write their feelings and opinions on a certain subject.

Social Networking has grown to be a widespread means of connecting with friends and their friends. Depending on the social networking website, nearly all of these online community members connect with a common interest, such as hobbies, religion, or politics.

Social networks have today grown to be a main means for internet marketers to promote their blog or website. Your first option is to include a link to your blog in your profile page. Otherwise, tell your online contacts of your blog by means of your messages, but only from time to time. Consider that your network is essentially social, so repeated selling will result in you being 'blocked' or 'uninvited'. Maintain your social integrity.

The most well-liked social networking tools are Facebook and Twitter with many people linking them both to save time making entries. There are numerous other social networking sites such as: FledgeWing which is an entrepreneural community aimed at worldwide university students; Gogoyoko Fair Play in Music which is a site for musicians and music lovers; Shelfari for booklovers; Yahoo! Answers which is a platform just for questions and answers.

With over 62 million active members, Facebook is a network that offers an enormous possibility for achieving high rankings. Similarly, when used in combination with Twitter, particularly Twitter accounts for a definite niche, your sphere of influence can grow exponentially. As soon as you have established a reliable reputation, you are able to occasionally put forward a great website or a very good article, video or webinar. This is how you bring in targetted visitors to your sites.

Social Bookmarking sites such as Digg, Technorati, Delicious, Reddit and StumbleUpon (to name just a few) enable you to connect with, arrange, search, and handle references to articles, videos or websites. That is, they are like a reference point from which people are sent to the information they may be in search of. Frequently they are attached with remarks or votes of approval or disapproval. This is known as a 'folksonomy' or social tagging and the benefit to internet marketers is that you can make certain your own tagged comments are keyword-rich and have a URL to your site.

There are two key steps to social bookmarking and social networking:
1. Provide a set of links to all of your selected social sites under your posts to enable targetted visitors to also extend the good word of your site's subject matter. Free programs such as Social Twist, make the process quick and simple.
2. Inform your preferred social sites yourself, again using your Social Twist tool, when you insert a post on your site (be it visual or audio).

Forums are the third manner of generating traffic by the use of social contacts. These assist people to recognize you as an expert in your area so you may send them, again only from time to time, to your site.
